A solid-state drives SSD is a flash-memory based data storage device. Bits are stored into cells, which are made of floating-gate transistors. SSDs are made entirely of electronic components, there are no moving or mechanical parts like in hard drives.
Voltages are applied to the floating-gate transistors, which is how bits are being read, written, and erased. This article only covers NAND flash memory, which is the solution chosen by the majority of the manufacturers.
An important property of NAND-flash modules is that their cells are wearing off, and therefore have a limited lifespan. Indeed, the transistors forming the cells store bits by holding electrons.
NAND-flash memory wears off and has a limited lifespan. The different types of NAND-flash memory have different lifespans . Recent research has shown that by applying very high temperatures to NAND chips, trapped electrons can be cleared out [14, 51]. The lifespan of SSDs could be tremendously increased, though this is still research and there is no certainty that this will one day reach the consumer market.
Bits are stored into cells, which exist in three types: 1 bit per cell single level cell, SLC2 bits per cell multiple level cell, MLCand 3 bits per cell triple-level cell, TLC. Table 1 below shows detailed information for each NAND-flash cell type. Table 1: Characteristics and latencies of NAND-flash memory types compared to other memory components. Having more bits for the same amount of transistors reduces the manufacturing costs. Choosing the right memory type depends on the workload the drive will be used for, and how often the data is likely to be updated.
For high-update workloads, SLC is the best choice, whereas for high-read and low-write workloads ex: video storage and streamingthen TLC will be perfectly fine.IOPS, latency and throughput and why it is important when troubleshooting storage performance. In this post I will define some common terms regarding storage performance. Later we will see different tools for stressing and measuring this. The most common value from a disk manufacturer is how much throughput a certain disk can deliver.
We shall return to this value later. Next term which is very common is called IOPS. This means IO operations per secondwhich means the amount of read or write operations that could be done in one seconds time. A certain amount of IO operations will also give a certain throughput of Megabytes each second, so these two are related. A third factor is however involved: the size of each IO request.
Each IO request will take some time to complete, this is called the average latency. This latency is measured in milliseconds ms and should be as low as possible. There are several factors that would affect this time. Many of them are physical limits due to the mechanical constructs of the traditional hard disk.
That is the number of times the plates will do a full rotate in one minutes time. Since the disk arm and the head who does to actual read or write is fixed in one position it will often have to wait for the plate to spin to the right position. So for the disk to spin the plate one full rotation takes from 4 to 11 milliseconds depending on the RPM. This is called the Rotational Delay and is important since the disk can at any moment be given an instruction to read at any sector of any track.
The disk spins at all times and it is most likely that the correct sector will not by pure luck be right under the disks read head, but instead the head will have to literally wait for the plate to spin around for the wanted sector s to become reachable. The arm is fixed at one end, but can swing from the inner to the outer part of the disk area see above and by so it can reach any position of the disk, even if it has to sometimes wait for the correct area to then spin into its scope.
The time it takes to physically move the head is called the seek time. When looking at the specification of a disk you could see the average seek timethe lower amount of seek time the faster is the movement of the arm. Once the arm is in the right position and the moment the plate has rotated enough we can begin to read something. Now depending on the requested IO size this will take different amounts of time.
If the IO size was very small minimum is byte then the IO is completed after the first sector is read, but if the request was 4 KB or 32 KB or even KB then it would take longer.
We will also hope that the next data is located on the next incoming sectors on the same track. Then the arm can wait for more data to roll in and just continue reading. If the data however is located on different parts of the disk we would have to re-position the arm and wait again for the disk to spin.
This is why fragmentation on a file system is so hurtful for performance. The more data that is continuously placed on the disk the better. An interesting note is that you can actually hear the arm move, that is: the typical intensive clicking noise from a hard disk is the movement of the disk arm.

Optimal queue length varies for each workload, depending on your particular application's sensitivity to IOPS and latency. Whatever your EBS volume type, if you are not experiencing the IOPS or throughput you expect in your configuration, ensure that your EC2 instance bandwidth is not the limiting factor. Some additional benefits of ultra disks include the ability to dynamically change the performance of the disk, along with your workloads, without the need to restart your virtual machines VM. Ultra disks can only be used as data disks. When you provision an ultra disk, you can independently configure the capacity and the performance of the disk. Ultra disks come in several fixed sizes, ranging from 4 GiB up to 64 TiB, and feature a flexible performance configuration model that allows you to independently configure IOPS and throughput.
The only infrastructure redundancy options currently available to ultra disks are availability zones. VMs using any other redundancy options cannot attach an ultra disk.
Understanding I/O request or block size
The following table outlines the regions ultra disks are available in, as well as their corresponding availability options:. Azure ultra disks offer up to 16 TiB per region per subscription by default, but ultra disks support higher capacity by request.

And I am not able to link them together. Three different terms I am confused with are block sizeIO and Performance.
I was reading about superblock at slashroot when I encountered the statement. As far as I am understanding the number of IO request required to read this data would also be dependent on the size of each IO request.
Standard SSD Disks for Azure Virtual machine workloads
So to calculate the maximum possible throughput we would need maximum IO size. And from this what I understand is If I want to increase throughput from a disk I would do request with maximum data I can send in a request. Is this assumption correct? I apologize for too many questions but I have been reading about this for a while and could not get any satisfactory answers. I found different views on the same. Absent simultaneous specifications of response-time and workload, IOPS are essentially meaningless. Like benchmarks, IOPS numbers published by storage device manufacturers do not directly relate to real-world application performance. On a spinning disk the performance of those calls is mainly dependant on how much the disk actuator needs to move the arm and read head the correct position on the disk platter. For benchmarks typically the read and write calls are usually set to either B or 4KB which align really well with the underlying disk resulting in optimal performance.
There must be a limit after which the request splits in more then one IO. How to find that limit? Yes there is a limit, on Linux as documented in the manual a single read or write system call will return a maximum of 0x7ffff 2, bytes.
Storage performance: IOPS, latency and throughput
To read larger files larger you will need additional system calls. To properly parse that statement and to understand the reason for a use of the term "filesystem" instead of disk and b that pesky "probably", you'll need to learn a lot more about all the software layers between the data sitting on a disk or SSD and the userland applications.
I can give you a few pointers to start googling:. For SSD's or other flash based storage, there are some additional complications. You should look up how flash storage works in units of Pages and why any flash based storage requires a garbage collection process.
